The contrast between the simple speckled glaze and the almost calligraphic fluid white and black decoration give this yunomi a real presence and I found myself reminded of the marks made by Mackenzie's fellow American artist, the painter Mark Tobey. The repetitive pattern gives a rhythm to the piece that would certainly encourage one to contemplate both form and decoration as a whole.
